Poached Eggs With Asparagus

It doesn’t have to be for a special occasion, I love both poached eggs and asparagus. This one turned out great. And I can make it a fad in my house that’s better than avocado toast!

Poached eggs really do go great with just about anything but paired with asparagus it is just something elegant. The yolk, the green stalks, the perfectly toasted bread. It’s become a morning favorite before work, that’s for sure.

Eggs are kind of funny when it comes to cooking them. Don’t heat them long enough, and they are runny, which is really unpalatable. Cook them just a hair too long and they are ruined.

When it comes to poaching eggs, you first get your water boiling really good. Like a full rolling boil. Some people swear by adding some vinegar or salt to the water, but I just use water. Others say to put the egg in a fold and close type sandwich bag.

Poaching an egg is cooking it outside of its shell as opposed to boiling it in the shell. Similar to a soft boiled egg, poached is easier to get onto a plat because you are not dealing with the shell, and you can ensure it is cooked the right amount before taking it out of the water.

To poach an egg, heat some water in a pan to about 75 degrees F, then gently slide an egg into the water. This is best done by first cracking the egg into a small bowl or cup. They will take about 3 minutes for the egg whites to solidify.

The perfect poached egg has fully cooked egg whites and a runny yolk. When using the traditional poaching method in an open pan it is sometimes helpful to stir the water to prevent the whites from spreading out too much.

My preferred pan to poach eggs with isn’t actually poaching them. Its steaming them, but those handy little cups make them come out perfectly round every time. If its presentation you want, this is a great way to get it.

Using Poached Eggs

Well, obviously you can use poached eggs in this dish. Poached eggs are used in a variety of other dishes as well such as Eggs Benedict, Eggs Sardou, Eggs Portuguese and many more.

The benefit of eating poached eggs is that they are not cooked in oils like fried or scrambled. And if yo like to dip some toast into yolk, they are way more fun than boiled eggs too. Poaching eggs is a great heart healthy way to get your protein in for the day.

  1. Fill a small saucepan halfway with water, add bouillon cube and bring to boil.
  2. Steam Asparagus until tender, about 6-7 minutes.
  3. While asparagus is cooking, crack one egg into large spoon and slip it into boiling water. Simmer for 5 minutes, remove with slotted spoon. allow to drain.
  4. Toast bread to desired level. Spread butter on toast. Top with cheese, then poached egg, then asparagus.
  5. Season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.
