Simple Asian Style Slaw
This simple Asian Style slaw has a wonderful light flavor with some added crunch to it. I like to make this slaw to go with my Asian inspired pulled pork sliders. It is awesome just by itself too.
Light, healthy, a zing of flavor and those crunchy bits really tie this dish together. The rice wine and sesame oil give it just the right touch to be a different type of coleslaw. If you are looking for something different that will please a crowd, this is it!
Putting this Simple Slaw Together
Grocery stores really have made coleslaw easy these days. You can head straight to the section where the lettuce is pre-cut and grab a bag, or you can shred it yourself. This time I grabbed a bag while I would normally get cabbage and start from scratch. It’s just so easy to get the bag because it has some red cabbage and carrots in it as well. Now they come in a variety and often include dressing!
No matter what you choose, for this one skip the bottled dressing and gather those ingredients. I will admit, I did not have rice wine on hand and had to go find some. Same with the ramen packets, I try NOT to have those kinds of food around. It was a short, but specific shopping list to put this together.
Then it’s really easy! Mix your dressing ingredients and then mix it into the slaw mix and you are all set! IF making for later, definitely add those crunchy bits at the last minute.
What to do When There is some left?
Simply cover it in an airtight container and place it in the fridge. The wonton strips will get soft, but they will still taste good. Leftovers will be good to eat for 3-4 days.
I often prepare all of the ingredients the night before and mix them up right before serving. rarely is there any actually left over. It is that good.
As this is a salad using a vegetable high in water content, freezing is not suggested. The water actually forms ice crystals that will pierce the cell walls of the cabbage making it very soggy. Besides, it’s so easy why would you have to freeze it?
Serving Suggestions for Simple Asian Style Slaw
I have never been a fan of plain old pulled pork sandwiches. Slow cook some pork and smother it with a bottle of sauce and slap it on a bun like a Sloppy Joe. BORING!
Season the pork, and pair it with a complementary slaw? Definitely better! Then you get more than just meat, sugar, and bread, you get tasty veggies on that sandwich too. There are so many pairings of pulled anything with a slaw to match too, you can absolutely kick up those summer gatherings a notch if you get creative.
This also goes well as a lettuce wrap for those that are carb conscious. Check your local bakery for some inventive breads too. There is no rule that says you have to use buns, try croissants if you like. Toast up some sourdough, or put it on a pretzel bun, really, anything you like to give it your special touch.
